Wayne Shorter at 80

Wayne Shorter turned 80 years old on August 25 – recently enough for the Monterey Jazz Festival to dedicate this Sunday evening performance on the Jimmy Lyons Main Stage to the saxophonist’s birthday celebration. Shorter is the Commission Artist of this year’s festival: Earlier in the weekend, trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano led a quintet through a new Shorter composition entitled “Sound Prints”.

Wayne Shorter: The KUSP Interview

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter spoke with KUSP’s Jeff Dayton-Johnson following his performance on the Main Stage. Shorter had been meeting with young members of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, some of whom were still in the room, and consequently some of Shorter’s comments had the tone of a teacher talking to students. He talked about music as investigation, as a component of social change, and about the deeper significance of creative expression.
