Wayne Shorter makes his presence felt at this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival
By: Mac McDonald

Diana Krall. Bobby McFerrin. George Benson. David Sanborn & Bob James. Joe Lovano. There are a lot of marquee names at the Monterey Jazz Festival this weekend at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.

But make no mistake, the 56th edition of the world’s longest continuously running jazz festival comes down to this: It’s Wayne’s World.

That would be jazz legend Wayne Shorter, who will not only be celebrating his 80th birthday at the festival (he was born on Aug. 25), but he will be presented with the festival’s Jazz Legends Award (previous recipients include Dave Brubeck and Jack DeJohnette) Thursday night at The Clement Hotel in Monterey, he wrote a commissioned piece (actually two pieces) for the festival to be performed by the Joe Lovano-Dave Douglas Quintet Saturday night and he will perform with his own marvelous quartet Sunday night, a concert supported by the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Live initiative. (He was accorded the NEA Jazz Master honor in 1988.)
